Rising Sun

The town’s name comes from a tavern that operated here in the colonial era—the Rising Sun Tavern, which like many taverns of that time served as a landmark and gathering place. Today, Rising Sun remains a place where community institutions matter: churches, civic organizations, the local schools.

The surprise attraction here is Plumpton Park Zoo, which opened in 1986 and now houses over 200 exotic animals from 60 species. The Lacovara family took it over in 2010 in a real-life ‘We Bought a Zoo’ story, rescuing the facility when the previous 86-year-old owner could no longer maintain it. Now it welcomes over 85,000 visitors annually. You can hand-feed Kazar the giraffe, see Siberian tigers playing, meet black bears and European brown bears, and see Black Backed Jackals—Plumpton is one of only four zoos in the United States with this species. It’s a genuinely nice zoo with a family-friendly atmosphere.

For adrenaline, Cecil County Dragway brings racing action. Chesapeake Bay Golf Club provides golf. Dove Valley Winery offers tastings and events. The Herr’s Snack Factory Tour is a short drive away for a behind-the-scenes look at chip production.

Rising Sun sits along the Mason and Dixon Byway, connecting to the broader region while maintaining its distinct small-town identity. You’re close enough to major employment centers—the I-95 corridor is accessible—but far enough to feel genuinely removed from suburban sprawl.
