Here’s a piece of trivia that might surprise you: Elkton was once the ‘Elopement Capital of the East Coast.’ In the 1920s and 30s, over 20 wedding chapels lined Main Street, and the little town of 3,000 issued more than 16,000 marriage licenses in a single year. Joan Fontaine, Debbie Reynolds, Willie Mays, and even Pat Robertson got married here. The ‘Honeymoon Express’ trains brought couples from New York and Philadelphia for quick ceremonies with no waiting period. That era ended when Maryland required a 48-hour wait, but Elkton’s Main Street character endures. Today, it’s Cecil County’s largest town and county seat—affordable, practical, and genuinely proud of its quirky history.
Elkton’s story goes back much further than its wedding chapel fame. Swedish settlers founded the area as ‘Head of Elk’ in 1694 at the northern headwaters of the Chesapeake Bay. This strategic location made it a Revolutionary War crossroads—General Howe marched his Anglo-German army through here in 1777, and George Washington and Rochambeau passed through on their way to Yorktown in 1781.
The marriage industry that made Elkton famous emerged after northern states passed restrictive waiting period laws in the early 1900s. Maryland had no such requirements, and Elkton—the first county seat south of the state line—became the destination. Cab drivers met couples at the train station, offering package deals that included the minister, the ring, the flowers, and a hotel room. At the peak in 1936, the town issued 11,791 marriage licenses—an average of 32 weddings every single day. ‘Marrying parsons’ performed ceremonies every 15 minutes.
Today, Elkton is a Maryland Main Street Community and Arts & Entertainment District, working to revitalize its downtown while honoring that colorful heritage. First Friday events bring people downtown. C3ntral Tavern serves American comfort food in the historic Lyons Pharmacy building that stood for 120 years. Spork Cafe on Main Street has earned a reputation for ‘the best sausage gravy in Cecil County.’ Baker’s Restaurant offers family-style dining that draws regulars two or three times a month.
