About the Area

Transit-Connected Living Between Two Cities

Things to Do

Laurel straddles four counties—Howard, Prince George’s, Anne Arundel, and Montgomery—which creates some confusion but also some opportunity. The Howard County portion of Laurel offers the best of both worlds: access to Howard County’s excellent schools while maintaining Laurel’s character as a genuine community with its own Main Street, historic district, and distinctly diverse population. If you work at Fort Meade, NSA, or commute to either Baltimore or Washington, this area deserves serious attention.

Places to Eat

The MARC train is Laurel’s secret weapon. The Laurel station provides direct commuter rail service to both Baltimore Penn Station and Washington Union Station, making car-free commuting genuinely practical. During rush hour, you can be in downtown DC or downtown Baltimore in about 30 minutes—often faster than driving and certainly less stressful. For government workers, contractors, and anyone with a flexible work arrangement, this connectivity is transformative. The station also provides access to Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor, making trips to Philadelphia, New York, and Boston feasible without driving to a major station.

Fort Meade and the National Security Agency are just minutes away, and the economic impact is enormous. Tens of thousands of workers commute to the intelligence community’s Maryland headquarters daily, and Laurel’s relative affordability compared to the immediately surrounding areas makes it attractive for this workforce. The Cyber Command relocation to Fort Meade has only increased employment density, bringing additional workers who need housing within reasonable commute distance. The area has developed a distinctly diverse character, with restaurants representing cuisines from around the world and a population that reflects the federal government’s increasingly multicultural workforce.

The Howard County portion of Laurel primarily includes the areas near Route 1 and north toward North Laurel. These neighborhoods benefit from Howard County Public Schools while maintaining easier access to Laurel’s commercial amenities than more isolated Howard County communities. Laurel Woods and Phelps Luck Elementary Schools serve the area, and students typically attend Reservoir High School, which has improved significantly in recent years and now ranks solidly in state rankings. The Howard County schools advantage is significant—families can access one of Maryland’s top-rated school systems while paying prices that would be impossible in more fashionable Howard County addresses.

Historic Laurel’s Main Street offers a walkable downtown experience that’s increasingly rare in suburban Maryland. Local shops, restaurants, and the Laurel Arts District create a sense of place that planned communities can’t replicate. The Laurel Town Centre provides basic shopping, while Laurel Lakes Centre and other commercial areas along Route 1 offer broader retail options. First Fridays bring community events to Main Street, with galleries opening their doors and restaurants offering specials that draw residents from across the region.

The outdoor amenities are surprisingly robust for an area that reads as suburban on the map. The Patuxent River flows through the area, and several parks provide access for kayaking, fishing, and hiking. Kayakers can launch from several access points and paddle peaceful stretches of the river that feel remarkably removed from the surrounding development. Fairland Regional Park, while technically in Montgomery County, is easily accessible and offers an aquatic center, trails, and sports facilities. The WSSC Water Tricentennial Park provides 400 acres of green space for hiking and nature observation.

The diversity of Laurel deserves particular attention. The community has become home to immigrant families from across the globe, reflected in restaurants serving Ethiopian, Salvadoran, Korean, Indian, and numerous other cuisines. Grocery stores stock ingredients from around the world, and the area’s churches, temples, and mosques serve communities that have chosen Laurel for its combination of affordability and accessibility. This multicultural character gives Laurel an energy and variety that more homogeneous communities lack.

One important note: property taxes and services vary significantly depending on which county’s portion of Laurel you’re in. Howard County properties pay Howard County taxes and receive Howard County services (including schools); Prince George’s County properties have different tax rates and school assignments. If Howard County schools are important to you, verify the exact location carefully—addresses can be misleading near county boundaries. A house that appears to be in Laurel might be in Howard, Prince George’s, Anne Arundel, or even Montgomery County depending on its exact location.

The honest trade-offs: Laurel lacks the polish and planned amenities of Columbia or the historic charm of Ellicott City. Route 1 can feel strip-mall-heavy in places, and traffic congestion during rush hour can be frustrating. But for buyers prioritizing transit access, Fort Meade proximity, genuine diversity, and affordability within reach of Howard County schools, the value proposition is strong.
