Port Deposit

The Granite Town on the Susquehanna

Port Deposit looks like no other town in Maryland—maybe no other town in America. Built from the distinctive granite quarried from cliffs rising dramatically above the Susquehanna River, the buildings here glow with a warm, honey-colored stone that’s been used in notable structures throughout the region since the 1820s. The entire town is recognized as a Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places, with intact Victorian architecture—Second Empire, Queen Anne, Gothic Revival—integrated with that local granite in foundations, walls, terraces, and facades. It’s a town where the geology shaped the economy, which shaped the architecture, which shaped the character. And that character remains.

About the Area

Captain John Smith explored this stretch of the Susquehanna in 1608, naming the rapids above town ‘Smythe Fayles.’ By the late 1700s, the location at the fall line made it a natural transfer point—goods floating downstream on timber rafts called arks would be ‘deposited’ here for transfer to larger ships bound for Baltimore. That’s how the town got its name.

Port Deposit’s golden era came in the 19th century. The granite quarries employed generations of workers, many of them Irish immigrants. The Columbia and Port Deposit Railroad connected the town to regional markets. Jacob Tome arrived here penniless and became Cecil County’s first millionaire—a banker, philanthropist, and founder of the Jacob Tome Institute, whose beaux arts granite buildings still stand on the bluffs above town. Another local son, John A.J. Creswell, rose from this small river town to become U.S. Postmaster General under President Grant, where he modernized the postal system and appointed African Americans to postal positions during Reconstruction.

The town has faced floods—Tropical Storm Agnes in 1972 devastated the waterfront—but Port Deposit has rebuilt and recovered. The 1978 National Register listing ensured preservation of its architectural legacy.

Today, Port Deposit offers an intimate community with genuine character. Lee’s Landing Dock Bar serves waterfront dining with Susquehanna views—burgers, fresh seafood, river breezes. Granite Run Taproom provides a local gathering spot. D’Lorenzo’s Pizza & Grille handles the takeout crowd. The Gerry House offers B&B accommodations in a historic setting. The Tome Visitor Center explains the town’s heritage and houses the Northern Map Turtle Research Center—the town has embraced protecting these creatures, with the official Town Reptile being a map turtle named Rhonda.

Marina Park provides waterfront access. Susquehanna State Park sits just across the river in Harford County, offering hiking, the historic Rock Run Mill, and outdoor recreation. Great Wolf Lodge is a 7-minute drive away for families seeking water park fun.

Real estate here offers something genuinely unique: historic granite structures found nowhere else, more modest homes, and waterfront options—all at prices that make character affordable.
