Forest Hill

Northern Harford's Quiet Gem

Forest Hill sits in that sweet spot between convenient and rural—close enough to Bel Air for easy access to shopping and dining, but far enough north to preserve country character. The Ma & Pa Heritage Trail winds through here, connecting to Friends Community Park and providing miles of recreational paths. Families come for the schools and stay for the community, the natural beauty, and the slower pace. It’s not as well-known as Bel Air or Havre de Grace, and longtime residents prefer it that way.

About the Area

Forest Hill developed along the old Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad line, which explains both its linear layout and its connection to the Ma & Pa Heritage Trail that now follows the former railbed. The railroad brought commerce and connectivity in the late 1800s and early 1900s; today the trail brings recreation and community connection.

The community has evolved from its agricultural roots while maintaining rural character. You’ll find a mix of established neighborhoods from various decades alongside some newer development, but density remains low compared to areas closer to Baltimore. Larger lots are common, and many properties back to woods or open space.

Schools drive much of the residential demand. Forest Hill students feed into well-regarded Harford County schools, and the community has traditionally attracted families prioritizing education and stability. Youth sports programs, school events, and community activities form the social fabric.

The Forest Hill section of the Ma & Pa Trail runs about 1.75 miles from Friends Community Park (with its duck pond and recreational facilities) south toward Blakes Venture Park. The recent completion of connecting sections now makes it possible to walk or bike from Forest Hill to downtown Bel Air—a genuine amenity that’s changed how residents experience the area.

Forest Hill lacks the commercial development of larger communities. There’s no real downtown—residents drive to Bel Air or the Route 1 corridor for most shopping and dining. But that absence of commercial sprawl is precisely what preserves the character that draws people here.

The community feeling is strong. Neighbors know each other. Kids grow up together and maintain friendships into adulthood. There’s a stability here that comes from people putting down roots and staying.

Things to Do

The Ma & Pa Heritage Trail offers miles of walking, running, and biking connecting to Bel Air. Friends Community Park has recreational facilities and the iconic duck pond. Rocks State Park with Kilgore Falls is nearby—some of the best hiking in the county. Harford Glen Environmental Education Center provides nature programming. Bel Air’s downtown dining and shopping is 10-15 minutes away. Ladew Topiary Gardens offers spectacular garden touring. The pastoral countryside rewards scenic drives and bike rides.

Places to Eat

Forest Hill proper has limited dining—that’s part of its character. The Forest Hill Station is a neighborhood gathering spot. But you’re 10-15 minutes from Bel Air’s expanding restaurant scene: One Eleven Main for farm-to-table fine dining, Das Bierhalle for German food and beer, Independent Brewing Company for craft beer, Sean Bolan’s for pub fare. The Local in nearby Fallston has become a destination for serious dining.

Prices generally fall between the premium of Fallston and the affordability of more southern communities. Properties with acreage command higher prices. The market is stable, driven by families seeking school quality and community character. Turnover is moderate—people who buy here tend to stay.
